Resident Artist

Maya Kramer

In June of 2019, the Artbarn will host Maya Kramer, an American artist currently residing and working in Shanghai. Maya’s work explores the human relationship to the environment through immersive installations and sculptures made from pollutants: coal and fake diamonds made into a night sky, a tiger skull constructed from laundry detergent, and a jungle crafted from the pages of the New York Times. During the residency, Maya plans to work on drawings, incorporating images or local flora and fauna, and drawing on aspects of the agricultural life and history in the region. She intends to “…use the cut out. Cutting out silhouettes from newspaper, paper and panels has been a reoccurring strategy of my practice and creates a sense of loss…I will work with a mix of ink, collage, copy paper, rust, coal and other materials.
